WAKEFIELD
- "We spend so much time in our homes, why shouldn't we
feel good while we're there?"
Diana Pilkington Armbrust is a Feng Shui design consultant
who, through employing the Chinese practice, wants to
simplify, energize and add balance to your life.
The objective of Feng Shui is to create balance in your home
and life using reason and common sense.
"Functionality is important. Clutter in your
surroundings equals clutter in your mind," said
Armbrust. "You should always feel a certain flow when
you walk through a room."
Armbrust believes people, not furniture, should have control
of their surroundings.
"You shouldn't have to squeeze between the bureau and
bed to get through your bedroom. The room can be set up in a
way that allows you to walk through with ease," she
said.
Feng Shui has been practiced for over a thousand years in
China. Its literal meaning is "wind and water" and
it symbolizes the space between heaven and Earth.
Using direction and time of day as guides, practitioners of
the ancient form of Feng Shui rearranged surroundings in a
way that would lead to a balanced environment, physically
and mentally.
Armbrust practices "Pyramid" Feng Shui, a modern
form that integrates biology, psychology and physics. It
focuses on the person and his or her experiences in a
certain place. "The basic tenets are the same,
but it's practiced in a different way. I don't use
compasses, I stress things like clearing clutter and adding
sunlight to rooms," said Armbrust. Armbrust said
doing simple things like changing the paint in the bedroom
from red, which promotes excitability, to the more calming
blue is an example of a simple change that can foster
harmony.
She was introduced to the practice of Feng Shui by chance.
"One day a woman walked into my office and said, 'Diana
you've Feng Shuied the office,' and I hadn't," said
Armbrust.
This interaction got Armbrust interested in Feng Shui and
eventually she got licensed through the Feng Shui Institute
of America. "I had been a massage therapist,
which is very physical work, for many years. I wanted to do
something more cerebral," said Armbrust
Armbrust believes people have misconceptions about Feng
Shui. "People think that because Feng Shui is an
ancient Chinese practice, that it's minimalist. Feng Shui's
goal is not minimalism, it's supposed to help you improve
your own personal living space."
Armbrust schedules private consultations for $150 and will
provide customers with solutions to enhance their quality of
life. "I'll try to create a sanctuary that
represents the customer's soul," said Armbrust.
She will be holding a workshop on March 27 from 9am-3pm. For
more information call Diana Pilkington Armbrust at 783-2339.
